Council agree Newcastle leisure sites plans
Councillors have agreed the future use of two sites in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, which are currently occupied by the Jubilee Pool and Knutton Recreation Centre.
Newcastle Borough Council (NBC) has announced that both sites will shut on 9 December ahead of the opening of a new £10m leisure facility to existing members on 12 December.
The new Jubilee2 health and wellbeing complex will offer an 80-station gym; a 25m pool; a training pool; spa facilities; dance studio; and a climbing wall. It will fully open in January.
Plans approved by NBC, the Jubilee Pool site will be cleared "at the earliest opportunity", with the possibility of being used on a short-term basis as a temporary car park.
Meanwhile, the Knutton Recreation Site will undergo a housing-led redevelopment with a replacement bowling green and the retention of some outdoor leisure facilities.
NBC cabinet member for culture and active communities James Bannister said: "With the opening of Jubilee2 in December and the official launch in early January 2012 an Olympic year, residents and visitors will have access to this excellent range of facilities."
