Council announces festival to combat childhood obesity
Birmingham City Council has announced the details of its next battle against childhood obesity and inactivity – a city centre sports festival.
Coinciding with Birmingham’s Discovery Day, the council will hold the city’s first ever sports festival in Centenary Square on 15 August.
Showcasing more than ten different sports – and held to coincide with this year’s Olympic Games – the festival will give children a chance to try out activities and emulate their sporting heroes in the hope that it will ignite interest in sport and a healthier lifestyle for years to come.
Cllr Ian Ward, cabinet member for leisure and sport, said: “The sports festival will provide a great opportunity for young people in Birmingham to try their hand at a variety of different sports.
It will be fun and interactive and we hope to encourage more children to take part in sporting activity on a regular basis.” Details: www.birmingham.gov.uk
