Council approves £7.5m Wolverton pool plans
Plans for the construction of a new £7.5m swimming pool on the site of an existing facility in Wolverton, Milton Keynes, have received the green light from councillors.
Milton Keynes Council's (MKC) cabinet backed recommendations to add the Wolverton Community Pool development to its capital programme in July 2010 once funding and detailed designs have been confirmed. A feasibility report drawn up by Archial Architects outlined three potential options, with an £8m complex at Stratford Road and a £7.27m plan to cover and upgrade an existing outdoor pool in the town also considered.
The development will include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool and learner pool, spectator seating for 120 people, a 50-station fitness gym, a dance studio/multi-purpose room and a changing village. According to the feasibility study, the new fitness gym could boast a room for GP referrals, while the dance studio/multi-purpose room will be able to accommodate classes of 40 for aerobics, martial arts and yoga.
A council report submitted to the cabinet said: "A proposed longstop date of September 2012 has been established for the opening of a fully-commissioned new pool facility on the site."
