Council confirms Portsmouth pool closure
Portsmouth City Council (PCC) has confirmed its intention to close the city's Victoria Swimming Centre once the £20m redevelopment of the Mountbatten Centre is completed in May.
The council is now planning to sell land on which the Victoria Swimming Centre is situated in order to contribute towards the cost of the Mountbatten Centre scheme, which is set to feature an eight-lane, 50m swimming pool. Other facilities at the newly-refurbished Mountbatten Centre will also include 12.5m teaching pool, a 150-station fitness suite and a health suite incorporating a steam room, spa and treatment rooms and changing rooms.
Terry Hall, PCC member for culture and leisure, said: "When Victoria opened all those many years ago, the people of Portsmouth had a swimming pool to be proud of. When the Mountbatten Centre opens, the people of Portsmouth will have a world-class swimming facility to be proud of."
