Council examines support for major events
A new strategic framework to help provide support for major events held in Gwynedd, North Wales, is among the recommendations outlined by a local authority report.
Gwynedd Council has also been urged to maximise the local benefits of hosting events and to work with other councils and the Welsh Assembly Government to help further boost the local economy. The report, put before the council's development scrutiny committee on 14 September, found that the sector is worth around £9m to Gwynedd's economy, including a £3.5m boost from Radio One's 'Big Weekend'.
Sioned Williams, head of the economy and community department, was the author of the report, which also revealed that the cancellation of the Faenol Festival cost the region around £1.5m in lost 'economic benefit'. In the report, Williams said: "Small and major events can create vibrancy in communities and this excitement is key to the attempt to attract and retain young people in Gwynedd and to promote it as a good place to live and venture.
"By working to attract major events to Gwynedd, we can maximise the additional tourism income, create new business opportunities and raise awareness of the area and its characteristics on a national, British and international level."
