Council moves forward with waterfront scheme
Southampton City Council (SCC) has shortlisted three developers for the proposed transformation of the city's Royal Pier Waterfront site, following discussions with the landowners.
The Crown Estate and Associated British Ports (ABP) jointly own the site, which includes Mayflower Park; the adjacent foreshore and seafront; and the Red Funnel ferry terminal, Royal Pier pavilion and derelict pier. Initial design ideas will now be drawn up by the shortlisted developers in the coming months, although proposals will have to include a permanent and improved site for the Southampton International Boat Show.
SCC leader Royston Smith said: "Royal Pier Waterfront is a unique opportunity for development partners, not only to become part of one of the most dynamic cities emerging in Europe, but also to create a legacy in Southampton of which they can be truly proud." A preferred developer is due to be selected in March 2011.
