Council moves to secure abbey's future
Northampton Borough Council (NBC) has moved to secure the future of Delapre Abbey as part of efforts to transform the site into a major visitor attraction.
Initial budget proposals included a £100,000 investment over a three-year period to support the property and carry out improvements that would increase public access. NBC's draft budget now includes a proposed £500,000 restoration fund to demonstrate its intention to ensure the restoration of the Grade II*-listed abbey moves forward.
Around £15m worth of work will need to be carried out in order to fully restore the site, but it is hoped the £500,000 will lever in additional funding. NBC's budget proposals will be discussed by the cabinet on 23 February and the full council on 28 February.
