Council steps in to rescue Horton woodland
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) has stepped in to rescue an area of woodland in Horton, Berkshire, after it was put up for sale.
Situated next to the Arthur Jacob Nature Reserve, the 15-acre (6.1-hectare) Poyle Poplars Woodland had been due to appear at auction on 7 October, following previous owner Thames Water's decision to sell off the land. However, the council is now in the process of acquiring the woodland after it was backed by Horton Parish Council, local residents, adjacent landowners and the local member of parliament.
RBWM lead member for planning, development and property, Alison Knight, said: "We have been able to rescue this land for the borough. If we hadn't stepped in, the woodland's new owners could have closed the land to the local community."
