Council to discuss football stadium future
Colchester Borough Council (CBC) is to discuss plans for the freehold sale of Layer Road football ground - the former home of Colchester United Football Club (CUFC).
The council's cabinet is to meet tomorrow (26 January) and is being recommended to agree to the disposal of the venue to progress the redevelopment of the site. Councillors will be asked to offer the 3.63-acre (1.47-hectare) Layer Road site to the highest conditional bidder, which is planning to provide 35 per cent affordable housing.
According to a CBC report, a total of 13 offers from nine bidders had been received by the close of a marketing process carried out by Savills, which ended on 12 November. Layer Road has remained vacant since mid-2008 after CUFC moved to its new Community Stadium at Cuckoo Farm.
