Council to help run Swindon leisure facility
Swindon Borough Council (SBC) has confirmed it has agreed to work alongside trustees of the town's Highworth Recreation Centre in a bid to secure the facility's future.
Highworth Recreation Trust called on the council to intervene after fears were raised about the facility's finances. An audit is now due to be carried out to determine the extent of the trust's debts. Highworth Recreation Centre, which is registered as a charity, is a joint venture between SBC and the Centre Management Committee, in partnership with the trust.
The trust owns the venue's swimming pool, the community hall, the changing facilities and the gym, which includes more than 20 stations of Technogym equipment and a free weights area. Meanwhile, the council owns the remaining facilities, including the four-court sports hall and squash courts. The leisure centre will continue to operate as normal.
SBC cabinet member for local environment and corporate affairs Fionuala Foley said: "Highworth Rec is a valuable facility for the people of Highworth and it is unfortunate the trust have run into financial difficulties. "We will be doing everything we can to ensure the leisure centre remains viable and that a suitable business plan is developed to safeguard its future."
