Councillors decide site of new Chester theatre
An art deco building that formerly housed Chester's Odeon Cinema has been selected to be the site for the development of the city's proposed new theatre by the local authority.
More than 70 members of Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWCC) "overwhelmingly" approved the choice of the new theatre location, which was selected ahead of Little Roodee.
It is hoped that the £43m venue will help fulfil plans for "two specific cultural quarters" in Chester, one being a spoken word and performance quarter centred on the town hall.
Another quarter for the visual arts and heritage will be based on the castle and Little Roodee, with the latter offering the potential for an iconic development of a "different nature".
CWCC culture and recreation executive member Stuart Parker said: "This will be a theatre for residents across the Borough - not just the people of Chester.
"As a producing theatre it will have links with every section of our communities, particularly, of course, as an educational asset for our young people."
Councillor Samantha Dixon added: "Our ambition should be for this theatre to have a reputation far wider than the city. It should be regional, national and even international."
