Countryside Code launched to ready for right to roam
The Countryside Agency has today unveiled the new Countryside Code to reflect the introduction of new open access rights and encourage people to enjoy the countryside.
However, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has said that there is still a ‘huge task ahead’ to clearly explain where and when people can use open access land when the first two areas open on 19 September.
“As a simple behavioural code, the Countryside Code is a handy reminder to young people how to respect the animals, people and environment when they are visiting the countryside,” said Mark Hudson, CLA president. “However, it falls a long way short of clearly explaining to the public about the new areas of access land.
“While members’ walking groups will most certainly receive detailed advice, we do not believe that the general public will take the time and trouble to cross-check a website to see where they can and can’t walk – never mind understand that the access land may be closed at certain times for land management purposes.”
The Countryside Code, which replaces the old Country Code, offers advice to the general public and landowners to tell both their rights and responsibilities.
It is being supported by a public service advertising campaign using characters created by Aardman animation in the style of its Creature Comforts TV series. Details: www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk or www.cla.org.uk
