Coventry museum opens new gallery
Coventry Transport Museum will open a new exhibition on the UK's car industry on 15th January.
The new permanent gallery, called Ghost Town? What happened to the Coventry Car Industry? - 1980 to 2010, will showcase the living history of the Coventry car industry during the last 30 years.
Iconic brands such as Jaguar, Peugeot Talbot and LTI taxis will be at the centre of the gallery along with other names that struggled to survive during this period.
The gallery tells a media-led story of the rollercoaster fate of Coventry's motoring industry through huge newspaper print displays.
The concept for the gallery was created by Steve Bagley, head of collections at the Museum, with input from students from Salford University.
The gallery will allow visitors to study and decide for themselves what led to the closure of the car factories, including watching video clips of the car industry workers telling their story of the tough times.
Gary Hall, chief executive of Coventry Transport Museum, said: "The new gallery attempts to highlight not just the economic upheaval but also the emotional turmoil that Coventry experienced as its motoring industry struggled to secure its future.
"It's the story of a recent past and people today can relate to the circumstances of those times."
