Coventry set for new swimming facilities?
New swimming facilities could be created to the north east of Coventry if a new strategy for improving the city's sports provision is given the green light by the local authority.
Coventry City Council's (CCC) cabinet members will discuss the proposals at a meeting on 3 January, which would see the new facilities built at the existing Centre AT7.
The plans include a 25m pool; a leisure/learner pool; a health suite; and community facilities, with Foleshill Sports and Leisure Centre to close once the new venue is complete.
It is expected the investment will be funded through the savings generated through closure of Arena Fitness Centre earlier this year, as well as the Foleshill facility.
Capital receipts from selling the Livingstone Road site on which Foleshill Sports and Leisure Centre is located and additional "rationalisation and efficiencies" will also contribute.
CCC cabinet member for community safety and equalities Phil Townshend said: "In 2012 - the year the Olympic Games comes to Coventry - we want to deliver a new model for sports provision across the city that puts people at the heart of a new vision for sport.
"By working more efficiently, effectively and replacing facilities which are no longer fit for purpose, we can recycle operational savings to reinvest in new, high quality sports facilities for Coventry people."
