Plans to redevelop the Craigieburn Leisure Centre near Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, have received a financial boost from the state government.

Minister for Community Development, Lily D'Ambrosio announced that government will provide AU$700,000 worth of funding towards the total cost of AU$5.75m.

The project will transform the existing Craigieburn Leisure Centre into a larger multipurpose community and recreation centre.

D’Ambrosio said: "Strong families need strong communities, which is why we are investing in modern accessible community infrastructure for the families of Craigieburn.

"The Brumby Labor Government supports sustainable population growth, and Craigieburn being a key growth area makes it eligible for this funding through our Community Facilities for Growth Areas programme.”

The new centre will boast two new competition size multipurpose indoor courts, more community meeting spaces, extra car parking spaces and shared administration facilities.

The environmentally sustainable centre will also feature a new expanded foyer space that can be used as a functions lounge for community celebrations and gatherings.

The work is being spearheaded by Hume City Council, who will manage the centre.

Building work is expected to commence in September, and be completed by the end of 2011.
