The crayon is about to make its mark in Florida as famous producer Crayola has revealed plans to open a new 70,000sq ft (6,500sq m) visitor attraction in Orlando – just 10 miles (16km) from Disney World – at the Florida Mall.

Opening in Q3 of 2015, the attraction will be similar to the existing Crayola Experience in Easton, Pennsylvania, featuring 25 hands-on attractions, including a crayon wrapping station, the ability for visitors to appear in their own colouring page and the biggest assortment of Crayola products anywhere in the world.

The family attraction will be ideally situated within the Florida Mall which, with 250 stores and restaurants, attracts 20 million visitors annually.

The existing Crayola Experience – which opened in 1996 – attracts 400,000 visitors a year, but placed in such a prime location, the developers expect to easily top this number. Following the 2015 opening, Crayola is planning to roll out additional sites across the US, according to Crayola CEO Mike Perry.

"I think there are a lot of markets that could support a Crayola Experience," said Perry speaking at a press conference. “Retail is a key component of the attraction, since visitors will be able to use products before they purchase them, making it different than most other retail operations.”
