Cricket legend to boost cricket tourism
Former West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara is planning to establish his home island of Trinidad as a pre-season training base for English cricket teams.
Lara told Sports Management magazine that initial talks had taken place with his former club Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) with the view of the club having their traditional pre-season tour in Trinidad.
"At the moment English clubs head to locations like Sharjah in the UAE to train ahead of the cricket season," Lara said.
"What I'd like to see is clubs coming to Trinidad - we have great facilities and adding to that clubs would benefit from being able to play games against tough, professional opposition."
Lara, who retired from cricket in 2007, has been appointed an ambassador for sport and tourism for Trinidad and Tobago - a role he will share alongside former Tobogan footballer Dwight Yorke.
