Cultural district planned for Kowloon
A design by Lord Norman Foster has been chosen for a new cultural district planned for West Kowloon in Hong Kong.
The 40-hectare waterfront site will include an all-enclosed building with a translucent roof intended to become a spectacular new harbour landmark.
The area will also see the creation of concert and theatre halls, arts and entertainment centres and hotels. It is also proposed that an automated people mover will be built to link the area with other busy points in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The first phase of the development is due to be completed in early 2010.
David Dean, Hong Kong Tourist Board’s director for northern Europe, said: “This will be the first newly-reclaimed area of Hong Kong to be specifically designated as an arts, culture and entertainment district for tourism purposes and we believe it will be a major attraction for visitors.”
