Our site plan is a combination of adaptive re-use and contextual design that will integrate with and enhance the community.
– John Woelfling

Dattner Architects have been chosen to transform the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center North Campus in Brooklyn into an affordable housing complex with integrated leisure, wellness and community elements.

The project, which is part of a wider initiative to create more affordable housing in Brooklyn, will see three buildings demolished on the 102,000sq ft (9,500sq m) site, as well as the redevelopment of a former hospital building.

A total of 266 residential units will be created, catering in part for older adults and disabled veterans, while on-site amenities and programmes will provide opportunities for recreation and socialising.

Among them will be a community garden, outdoor exercise equipment, walkways, children’s play areas, outdoor kitchens, an indoor teaching kitchen, community spaces and bike storage.

There will also be a nurse’s station and counselling space, with residents given access to health and wellness classes and integrated care.

Other programmes provided on-site will include vocational training and physical activity, while sustainability elements will include solar panels and green roof systems.

John Woelfling, principal at Dattner Architects, said: "As an architect in the community, my firm and I are excited to help transform the Kingsbrook campus to include much needed affordable, inter-generational and supportive housing.

"Our site plan is a combination of adaptive re-use and contextual design that will integrate with and enhance the community."
