Days of the funfair goldfish look numbered
For decades, children have won goldfish by knocking down coconuts at fairgrounds but many fish die from shock or neglect and steps are being taken to ban the winning of fish as prizes, reports the Daily Mail.
The RSPCA is backing moves by local councils to outlaw the tradition of handing out fish as prizes at summer fairgrounds. “We’re very concerned about the practice,” Steve Cheetham, veterinary officer for the charity, told the Daily Mail.
“It encourages people to take the animal on as a impulse rather than making a measured decision. We’re also concerned about keeping them in a plastic bag as it causes stress, shock and a lack of oxygen.”
“They can die from the changes in water temperature because the bags heat up in the sun. Many die before they make it to the tank.”
There are currently no regulations governing the giving out of goldfish at fairgrounds but many local councils have already outlawed the tradition.
