Delhi to host Commonwealth Games
India will host the Commonwealth Games for the first time after the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) awarded the XIX games for 2010 to Delhi.
The city beat the Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 after being favourites to win at a meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
CGF president, Mike Fennell, said both cities had provided solid technical bids and strong final presentations to the assembly.
He continued: “Delhi and Hamilton each demonstrated a strong desire to host the games but there could only be one winner.”
It will be only the second time an Asian city has hosted the Games, Kuala Lumpur having done so in 1998. Details: www.commonwealthgames.com
