Development plans for Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, is to see a number of new developments over the next two years.
Herzog and De Meuron, the architects responsible for London’s Tate Modern, have designed two of the schemes, due to open next year.
The first is the Oscar Dominguez Centre, which forms part of the new 16,200sq m Cultural and Contemporary Arts Centre. Adjacent to the Museum of Nature and Mankind, the centre will also be home to the Tenerife Photography Centre and the Tenerife Library.
The architects are also behind the new Plaza de Las Islas Canarias. The plaza is the new name for the existing Plaza de Espana, which is being developed to include a 35,570sq m pedestrian area linking the town and the port. It also includes the development of a new Marina of the Atlantic, which will be able to house 700 boats.
A further project for the city is the regeneration of Las Teresitas Beach.
Architect Dominique Perrault has redesigned the area to include a 50,000sq m Palm Grove which will surround the beach, a casino, a shopping plaza and cultural centre which will house the Tenerife Fishing Museum and Thalassotherapy and sports facilities.
The 33m euro project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2005.
