DfT to consult on Liverpool cruise plans
Liverpool could be permitted to enable cruise liner operators to start and finish in the city as part of new proposals put out to consultation by the Department of Transport (DfT).
The City of Liverpool Cruise Terminal - owned by Liverpool City Council and managed by Peel Ports - is currently restricted to cruises calling at the city as part of a longer trip. Opened in 2007 with the support of the Northwest Regional Development Agency and the European Union, restrictions were put in place to ensure fair competition with other ports.
Liverpool City Council is proposing to pay back £5.3m over 15 years as part of its bid to have the restrictions lifted, with a decision expected in the new Parliamentary year.
