ISPAL members can get a 20 per cent discount on Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play, the flagship publication from Fields in Trust.

The book is a vital tool for all town planners, architects, local authorities, property developers and anyone else with a professional interest in sport, play or recreation provision.

Recreational space and facilities play an important role in ensuring communities stay fit and healthy but the increasing pressure on land in the UK can often make such spaces vulnerable to development.

In light of these often-conflicting agendas, Fields in Trust has produced a new edition of the flagship publication The Six Acre Standard, in a new and improved format and with a new name.

Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play continues to uphold the original FIT recommendation that six acres of recreational space is required for every 1,000 people - a benchmark which has become the accepted industry-wide standard since its inception in the 1930s.

It also provides a detailed framework of the issues relating to quantity, quality and accessibility of outdoor facilities for sport and play and the importance of local assessments and standards.

Produced in a binder format for ease of use and subscription updates, the new edition addresses the sustainability agenda and its impact on the long-term provision of recreational space. Annual updates for the first year will include a series of technical illustrations and summaries of planning guidance for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These are all available free of charge.

Individual ISPAL members can purchase copies of Planning and Design for Outdoor Sport and Play for the reduced rate of £75 (rrp. £95).
