Dome could become London casino
The owners of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas are considering a move to the Millennium Dome, according to The Times newspaper.
News of the biggest planned shake-up in British gambling laws since 1968 is reported to have reached Nevada, and has raised the possibility of a new attraction on the Greenwich site.
The Times says the recent White Paper proposing the abolition of tight controls on where casinos can operate has excited the interest of Park Place Entertainment, owners of the 2,454-room hotel on the Strip with its Ancient Roman theme, casino and world-class boxing ring.
Deborah Munch, a vice-president of PPE, is quoted as saying: 'The recent recommendations for casino gaming laws in Britain have potentially great opportunities for our company; we are now very interested in the UK.' She refused to be drawn on a suggestion that the Dome and its surrounding 160-acre site would be an ideal location for a Caesar's Palace Mark II.
But the American Anschutz Entertainment Group, leading the consortium that has preferred bidder status for a 999-year lease on the Dome and its land, is believed to have indicated that it would consider a casino as part of its billion-pound redevelopment plan.
Under the 1968 Gaming Act which may now be scrapped, the spin of the roulette wheel is not permitted in Greenwich; casinos in London are currently restricted to the City of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and parts of Camden. The proposed changes would also mean that punters no longer had to register at a casino 24 hours before placing their first bets.
