Donald Trump may develop West Wirral golf resort
Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking a private sector partner for the development of a golf resort.
American billionaire, Donald Trump has expressed an interest in the Hoylake Golf Resort development, would be built next to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club the venue for the 2006 Open Championships.
A spokesperson for Trump’s organisation, said: “We would definitely be interested, it’s certainly a place to do business because it has such a great deal to offer.
“Trump’s plans for a £1bn Links resort in Scotland would not prevent the company considering an opportunity in Wirral.”
The 333-acre resort would include a private clubhouse, golf course, five-star hotel with restaurant, health and leisure facilities and spa.
A spokeswoman from Wirral Council said: “It’s very much a partnership with the neighbouring Royal Liverpool Golf Club. When we secure an investor we will also be enhancing Wirral’s municipal golf course, so there will be three courses within five-minutes of each other. It will enhance the facilities available for golfers who want to stay at the resort but play on all three courses.”
Jim Wilkie, deputy chief executive of Wirral Council said: “We knew Wirral’s sporting history and the worldwide attention generated by the Open would make the opportunity of interest to international investors.”
The development of a golf resort is one of several key proposals put forward by a final masterplan report for the regeneration of Hoylake and West Wirral, carried out November 2004.
The report suggested delivering a “classic resort” that has the potential and opportunity to evolve into a “regional recreational resort,” resulting in an enhancement to the towns people’s quality of life while delivering economic development.
The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) and R&A (Royal and Ancient Golf Club), the administrator for the Rules of Golf and Open Championships, have already approved the proposal but no planning application has been submitted.
