Dutch architect secures Moscow stadium project
Netherlands-based architect Erick van Egeraat has won an international design competition and secured the commission for the VTB Arena Park in Moscow.
The 300,000sq m VTB Arena Park will include the complete redevelopment of the home of Dinamo Moscow football club. The mixed-use project is set to be one of the largest sport projects in Russia in recent years.
VTB Bank will provide an investment of around €500m (US$644m, £421m) for the development, which comprises the redevelopment of the Dynamo Moscow's existing, outdated stadium and its surrounding park.
Erick van Egeraat proposed a contemporary multifunctional urban regenerator, that will play a key role in transforming its wider surroundings.
Van Egeraat's winning designs include the creation of a separate cultural hub, the redesign of the 45,000-seat stadium, a new 10,000-seat arena hall, a retail and entertainment complex, restaurants, parking and other leisure facilities.
Other key characteristics of the winning proposal include the historic preservation of the stadium.
The main aim is to create a self sustaining business model with a mix of sports, culture and retail facilities so that the park can be developed as a 'vibrant hub which stays open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year'.
Egeraat and his Russian partner Mikhail Posokhin, from architects Mosproekt-2, have already selected a team of Russian and international consultants, including Bollinger + Grohmann structural engineers, Amsterdam ArenA Advisory, Artec Acoustic consultants and Illuminator lighting consultants.
The Dynamo Moscow stadium is located at Petrovsky Park in the heart of Moscow.
