UK manufacturer Abacus is dominating golf course floodlighting in the Middle East and has installed its lighting equipment at nearly every course in Dubai. The company's commitment to innovation, high engineering standards and quality production ensures minimum impact on all types of locality and environment.

Twenty five years ago, Dubai did not have a single grass golf course. Now it has some of the best in the world and is fast becoming one of the world's favourite golfing holiday destinations.

But, with summer temperatures climbing to above 45 degrees, daytime play can be anything but relaxing.

However, thanks to Abacus Lighting, Dubai's golfers can now experience play under the Arabian night sky and relax in the knowledge that their floodlit game is not contributing to the growing problem of light pollution.

Dubai has undergone massive development over the past few years and environmentalists throughout the region have long been raising concerns over its night sky glow.

Orange and pink sky glow from urban areas not only obscures the night's stars but also has a potential harmful impact on wildlife, affecting growth, reproduction and migration.

The control of light pollution is a high priority design consideration for both new Abacus projects and existing installations. For example, the 200 Abacus’ Challenger® floodlights which have been specially developed to eliminate upward wasted light and glare.

Abacus' Export Sales Director, John Anthony, commented: "Our Challenger® 1 2kW floodlight is a is a high performance floodlight featuring a double asymmetric beam distribution which ensures minimum upward light, tight control of overspill and minimal glare to onlookers. The high performance floodlight allows golf to carry on even after sundown while its innovative 60 degree optics also allow players to follow the ball more clearly along the fairway from the tees as the beam picks up the 'shape' of the ball in flight.”

Abacus has also installed floodlighting solutions at the Emirates Golf Club; Nad Al Sheba Golf Club and Al Hamra, all of them now carrying Challenger floodlights on their driving ranges as well as the courses themselves. Installation is also now underway at the brand new Mudon course and driving range.
