Sustainability needs to be part of every spa’s DNA
Credit: BC Softwear

BC Softwear has expanded its collection of towels, robes and spa linens with the introduction of the Luxury Bio Slipper. The sustainable slipper has been designed with an Npulp straw sole to offer both compostability and recyclability without sacrificing the plush softness expected in high-end spa footwear.

The Npulp sole replaces traditional coir with a unique compressed straw material, created through an enzyme-based process that breaks down straw into pulp.

This eco-friendly method eliminates the need for harsh chemicals, significantly reducing water and energy consumption, and requires only three ingredients: straw, water and the digestion enzyme. The material’s sustainability is validated by its OK Compost certification, confirming its biodegradability and low environmental impact.

Barbara Cooke, BC SoftWear’s founder and CEO, highlighted the growing demand for sustainable spa slippers:

“Three years ago, we introduced a fully biodegradable coir-soled slipper made from natural coconut fibres, which was plastic-free and could be disposed of in a standard food waste bin.

“But, we were aware they weren’t as luxurious or soft as the five-star spa community often requires, so we’ve gone back to the drawing board and come up with this brand-new design.”

The new soles also provide enhanced anti-slip protection and water resistance – both key features for spa environments.

“Behaving in a more environmentally conscious way is no longer just a nice ‘extra’ for spas. Sustainability needs to be part of every spa’s DNA, and it’s the little changes that can add up to make a big environmental impact,” adds Cooke.

“With energy saving so high on the agenda, BC SoftWear considers the environmental impact of everything we do; we’ve transitioned to using paper wraps for all of our packaging, saving 50 tonnes of single-use plastic each year, and our principal factory is powered by solar panels.

“We’re here to support spas every step of the way in their bid to become more eco-conscious.”
