Eden Project imports pest control
The Eden Project has been awarded a zoo licence to put insect-eating birds and lizards inside its tropical biome. The greenhouse project, built in a former clay pit in Cornwall, is experiencing difficulties maintaining a balanced ecological environment, and is introducing the animals in the largest of three biomes to keep the numbers of insects down. The zoo licence has been granted with a number of strict criteria restricting the species and numbers of animals permitted in the biome to ensure that a strict balance is maintained - the Eden Project has consulted Newquay Zoo in the process. Although butterflies and tiny predators such as ladybirds are already in place, the new additions will be the largest creatures in the biome.
