Eden Project leads UK attraction in healthy food survey
The Eden Project in Cornwall has been named the healthiest UK attraction in which to eat and drink in a survey of 14 sites carried out by the Soil Association – the environmental organisation which promotes organic food and farming – and Organix, the children’s food company.
Eden’s food and beverage manager, Jo Bates, said: “We are dedicated to be producing healthy, tasty, nutritious food for our guests and we’re delighted that it makes a difference to their visit.
“It’s heartening to think that no child is ever far away from a fresh bowl of fruit or a healthy drink while they’re here.”
The Tower of London was also praised, but of the 14 attractions visited – including Thorpe Park, Legoland, Alton Towers and London Zoo – by a “secret mum” researcher, the two venues were the only places that received more than half marks.
The attractions were ranked out of 25 according to their provision of a choice of basic, healthy food and drink options like fresh water and fruit, as well as the choice of a kids’ meal deal that included a portion of fruit and vegetable and a healthy drink.
Camelot Theme Park in Lancashire and New MetroLand in Tyne and Wear came at the bottom of the list, receiving just one mark each. On the days she visited the sites, the researcher apparently could not find any fruit and vegetable options – they only offered processed meat or fish, chips and fizzy drinks.
Peter Melchett, the Soil Association’s policy director, said: “Not to provide kids with the option of free water on a day out is scandalous. It’s crazy not even bothering to offer fresh fruit or the choice of a healthy meal for children.” Details: www.soilassociation.org
