Eden meets Manhattan for eco-Dome at Greenwich
The creator of the Eden Project, Tim Smit, has joined forces with the architects of the London Eye to propose an eco-friendly development on the Greenwich Peninsula.
The Greenwich Gardens proposal, incorporating the Dome, could see the peninsula transformed into a Manhattan-style version of the Eden Project, turning the Dome into a biome with high-rise residential towers surrounding it.
A spokesperson for The Eden Project said that while no formal bid had been lodged, Tim Smit, David Marks and Julia Barfield - the husband and wife team behind the London Eye - have had 'fun discussions' about the project.
In a statement, architects Marks Barfield believe the commercial and residential development is a perfectly timed opportunity for a public/private partnership. The 'affordable yet high quality project', the size of Battersea Park and with enough housing for 14,000 people, could transform the Dome into 'a successful project in the eyes of London and the nation'.
