Sports trust Edinburgh Leisure has won two awards for its health work in the community.

The trust, which operates leisure facilities on behalf of Edinburgh City Council, won the Active Ageing and the Mental Health and Wellbeing categories in the Physical Activity Health Alliance (PAHA) Awards scheme, Active Factor, for its Ageing Well and Healthy Active Minds programmes.

Ageing Well promotes healthy lifestyles for people over 50 - and is led by trained volunteers all aged over 50 themselves.

Healthy Active Minds is a physical activity GP referral programme for patients with mild to moderate mental health issues.

Head of sports and physical activity development for Edinburgh Leisure, Helen Macfarlane, said: "This is a fantastic result for both the Ageing Well and Healthy Active Minds teams and a clear acknowledgement of all the work that has gone into these projects by a dedicated team of workers and volunteers."

Linda Irvine, Strategic Programme Manager for NHS Lothian, which funds the Healthy Active Minds project, said: "I am delighted that the project has been recognised with this award. The project is an excellent example of positive partnership working.

"Healthy Active Minds is part of Lothian's Joint Mental Health and Well Being Strategy. This strategy encourages the consideration of a range of treatment options, including physical activity and therapies, for addressing common mental health issues.

"It is widely known that physical activity and structured exercise plays an important role as a treatment option for people with mild to moderate depression."

The award winners were announced at the 4th Annual National PAHA Conference at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh on 25 February.
