England poised to withdraw 2022 bid?
England could be set to withdraw its bid to host the 2022 World Cup if the US agrees to formally pull out of the race to stage the 2018 event.
According to the BBC, England 2018 bid international president David Dein told a media briefing that he expected the US to pull out of the 2018 race. Dein added that England would "almost certainly" end its efforts to secure the 2022 tournament in response.
However, US Soccer shows no sign of withdrawing its 2018 bid as it appointed PepsiCo chief executive officer Indra K Nooyi to the board of its bid committee. US Soccer president Sunil Gulati had previously indicated that its 2018 bid would be withdrawn if it was in its "best interest" to do so, amid growing opinion the event will be held in Europe.
