The outdated Epic Leisure Centre in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, is to be replaced by a new facility located elsewhere in the town.

According to a detailed feasibility study by consultants Strategic Leisure, the centre is in such a bad state of repair that the potential benefits of a complete refurbishment have been ruled out. In total, Strategic Leisure shortlisted three sites, one of which was dismissed as it meant the rearrangement of high schools in the borough.

Council leader Justin Madders said: “Top class facilities are crucial to our aims of improving the health of residents and providing unbeatable facilities to people of all ages and abilities.

“Epic is a popular centre but requires so much investment that a replacement is the only sensible way forward. We want that replacement centre to be a facility to be proud of, suitable for hosting competitions as well as everyday use by residents.”

Proposals for the new centre include a 25m, eight-lane swimming pool and a large learner pool with seating for 400 spectators, as well as a six-court sports hall, a fitness suite, two studios, a crèche and a cafeteria.

The existing 6,000sq m centre includes a swimming pool and learner pool, a viewing balcony, a fitness studio, a café, dance studio and a cinema.

Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council is holding public consultations this week to establish the local community’s opinions on two possible alternative sites for the new facility.

Madders added: “This is an important legacy for Ellesmere Port and the borough council, and we’re keen to hear residents’ views on the best possible location.

“Our aim is to improve the health of residents and provide unbeatable facilities for people of all ages and abilities.”
