A new sister building to the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Manhattan, New York, US, opened on 1 December 2007 – celebrating the institution’s 30th anniversary.

The building – designed by Tokyo-based architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA with Gensler – houses the institution’s contemporary art collections.

The second floor Eugenio López Galleries provide around 5,000sq ft (465sq m) of exhibition space, while the third floor Maja Hoffman/Luma Foundation Galleries offer 4,000sq ft (372sq m) of exhibition space and the smallest fourth floor Dakis and Lietta Joannou Galleries, 3,000sq ft (279sq m).

The New Museum’s Pauline and Constantine Karpidas Education Center offers a classroom, video editing room and a resource centre, while the 2,000sq ft (186sq m) Toby Devan Lewis Skyroom hosts events and special programmes.

The 182-seat Peter Jay Sharp Theater also provides a pre-function hall which doubles as a gallery for special projects.
