FC United of Manchester (FCUM) has revealed plans to develop a new 5,000-capacity stadium at the Ten Acres Lane sports centre in Newton Heath, Manchester.

The supporter-owned club was formed in 2005 in a protest against the acquisition of Manchester United Football Club (MUFC) by US-based tycoon Malcolm Glazer. Plans for the £3.5m Newton Heath scheme will see the club move from its current home at Bury's Gigg Lane venue to the initial home of MUFC and incorporates new community and sports facilities.

The sports centre site is owned by Manchester City Council (MCC), which is working alongside with the club and regeneration agency New East Manchester on the proposals. FCUM general manager Andy Walsh said: "The significance of this location is historical while it will also showcase a new model of facility development, based on football supporter ownership and community involvement."

Meanwhile, Gloucester City Football Club of the Blue Square North has received £20,000 from the local council towards plans to share Cheltenham Town Football Club's ground next season. The funding will enable the club to work alongside Gloucester City Council on sporting initiatives in the city, while efforts continue to secure a new home to replace the flood-damaged Meadow Park venue.

Supporters of Cambridge United Football Club (CUFC) attempting to buy back the club's Abbey Stadium from owner Bideawhile have failed after running out of time to provide a £350,000 deposit. Grosvenor Developments has agreed a deal to acquire the ground from Bideawhile, although an existing lease agreement includes a pre-exemption clause allowing the club to step in if funding could be obtained.

Cambridge Fans United chair Dave Matthews Jones said: "While we had tremendous support from fans and others, with expressions of interest from over 700 people, some of considerable value, we have to admit defeat on this." Elsewhere, fans of the now-defunct Chester City Football Club have selected Chester Football Club as the name of a newly-formed club that will take its place.
