The FIA presented its On the Move to 2010 campaign at a conference aimed at tackling obesity last month.

Nigel Wallace, the FIA’s executive director, was joined by Tessa Jowell, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, and Melanie Johnson, parliamentary under-secretary of state for public health, at the event, entitled Tackling Obesity in Young People: Effective Partnerships for Healthier Children.

Other speakers included Roger Draper, chief executive of Sport England; David Walker, broadcaster and social policy specialist for The Guardian and Dr Ian Campbell, chair of the National Obesity Forum.

The conference investigated the key issues surrounding the obesity epidemic – such as the growing financial, psychological and health-related costs of the condition – and looked at how different partnerships are tackling the obesity timebomb.

Wallace said: “Combined action is essential if we are to make a positive impact on the nation’s health. No one sector of society can diffuse this timebomb alone – we all have to play a part.

“The On the Move to 2010 campaign is a positive step that the fitness industry has taken to tackle the obesity issue.”
