The British Olympic Association (BOA) will break new broadcasting ground by live-streaming an event for the first time via its digital channels.

Team GB’s Facebook page will show live coverage of England Leopards women taking on Slovenia in a table tennis European qualifying tie.

Medway Park will host the match, which begins at 6pm on 22 November. The stream will feature commentary and player interviews, as well as the match action.

While this move represents a first toe in the water for the BOA, Table Tennis England has already experimented with live streaming via TheSPORTBible Facebook page, which broadcast England men’s match against Greece earlier this month.

The broadcast attracted 2.1 million unique users on the social media site.

Sports Management understands that the BOA is keen to explore further live streaming options with other national governing bodies if the event is successful. However, there is nothing concrete in the works as yet.

Bill Sweeney, chief executive of the BOA, said the move was an “incredibly exciting venture”.

“We’re delighted to be able to bring live sport to our digital channels for the first time and support one of our national governing bodies,” he added.

“We saw the success of our Facebook Live productions during Rio 2016 but offering live sport and hosting Table Tennis England’s qualification match allows our fans to follow our sports closer than ever with Team GB.”

Table Tennis England chief executive Sara Sutcliffe said she was pleased the stream would promote women’s sport.

She added: “The Olympics showed just how much interest there is in sport across the board in this country and we’re thrilled to be at the forefront of a new type of live sports coverage.”
