Fatal accident at Barcelona theme park
A 15-year-old girl has been killed at the Tibidabo theme park in Barcelona, Spain.
The girl, who has not yet been named, died on Saturday (16 July) while riding El Pendulo (The Pendulum), in a crash that left two others hospitalised with serious injuries.
The ride - one of the park's key attractions - is described as a "long articulated arm where passengers are taken up to 38ms (124 ft). From here, you are dropped in a free fall reaching 100kph (60 mph) in 2.8 seconds. Once you reach the bottom, the arm takes you through a 50m arc".
Witnesses say that the arm broke off and landed on another ride, called The Golden Mine.
It has also been reported that less than four hours before the accident, a maintenance team was called out to tend to the ride because it had been making strange noises. After a 10-minute inspection, however, the ride was allowed to continue.
