Filey leisure facility on hold
Scarborough Council has put on hold plans to build a purpose-built sport and leisure centre in Filey.
Proposals to establish a new leisure facility boasting an indoor swimming pool, a multi-purpose sports hall and outdoor pitches under the direction of Sport and Leisure in Filey Environs (SLIFE) have come to a standstill owing to the current economic downturn and redirection of Lottery funding for the 2012 Games.
According to the Filey & Hunmandy Mercury, chair of Filey Sports Partnership, David Murton, said: “What annoys me is that every study has been done and paid for, but at the end of the day we see all developments going somewhere else. Ten years down the line we’re no further forward.”
However, Brian Bennett, head of tourism and culture services at the council, reassured the local community, saying: “There could be something on the horizon that would act to kick-start the project, so you could get a sports hall as a first stage.”
