Finnish Maritime Museum boss suspended
Leena Haila, the director of the Finnish Maritime Museum, has been suspended until further notice after the Museovirasto (the National Board of Antiquities, NBA) raised concerns over her financial dealings at the institution.
The museum, located within the Vellamo maritime centre in the city of Kotka, recently underwent a redevelopment.
The authorities are now looking into allegations that Haila selected a company registered to herself - and another owned by her husband - to undertake the refurbishment works.
According to Helsingin Sanomat, the NBA alerted the police after discovering discrepancies in the billing of the work.
Tiina Mertanen has named as Haila's interim replacement.
Haila has been the director of the museum since August 2005, and oversaw the museum's move from the capital Helsinki to the Vellamo site, which was completed in 2008.
