Fitness First looks at smaller rival
Fitness First is believed to be in exclusive talks to buy smaller operator Fitness Exchange for between £10m and £15m, according to The Times.
Fitness Exchange, which operates 10 health clubs in London and one each in Beckenham, Oxford and Norwich, was founded in 1974 by former England squash and hockey captain Mike Corby.
Colin Waggett, chief operating and finance officer at Fitness First, declined to comment on the reports.
Fitness First has started the new year with the opening of a new club in High Wycombe.
The purpose-built, 11,400sq ft (1,050sq m) club is spread over two levels, with a resistance and CV area on the ground floor along with circuit and personal trainer zones. The gym is kitted out by Life Fitness.
On the upper level, there is a studio providing a range of classes from pilates to group cycling, with bikes supplied by StarTrac.
The group is set to open its second club of the year in Cheltenham in March. The 19,730sq ft (1,830sq m) new-build site will include a gym, studio, relaxation areas and a swimming pool.
In the summer, Fitness First is set to open a further new facility in Brentwood, Essex.
