Florida Marlins, the Miami-based Major League Baseball (MLB) team, is set to relocate to a new 37,000-seat ballpark in Little Havana, Miami, US, ahead of the 2012 season.

The team will rename itself as the Miami Marlins to coincide with the opening of the stadium, which has been designed by Populous and has cost around US$515m (£321m, EUR374m).

Built on the site of the former Miami Orange Bowl, the ballpark is to incorporate a retractable roof and a natural playing surface. It is also aiming to achieve LEED certification.

The scheme is being led by a joint venture consisting of Hunt Construction Group and Moss and Associates, in conjunction with MARS Contractors.

A spokesperson for the Florida Marlins said: "A modern, destination-class ballpark is a crucial component in building and maintaining a world-class Major League Baseball team.

"The ballpark will combine the timeless elements of ballparks beloved by fans across the country with the design and amenities essential to sports facilities of the 21st century."
