Nottingham-based Focus Consultants has been appointed as lead consultant on a new project designed to transform Coventry Transport Museum into an "internationally significant" attraction.

The redevelopment is in line to secure a £4.9m grant after it received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will include a major overhaul of the attraction's exhibition spaces.

Plans also include the revitalisation of the Grade I-listed Old Grammar School, which will be brought back into use as a public access archive and educational facility at the museum.

Coventry Transport Museum features one of the largest collections of British road transport in the world, with around 250 motor vehicles, 450 cycles and 120 motorcycles.

Focus Consultants partner Kevin Osbon said: "This is an exciting project, not just for Coventry, but for the wider transport heritage world too as the transport museum is of international significance."

The firm, which will now work with the redevelopment team on the next phase of the Lottery bid, has also worked on schemes such as Southampton's new SeaCity Museum.

Other projects involving Focus Consultants include the revamp of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, which has recently been crowned 2012 Art Fund Prize winner.
