Football event to mark Ravenscraig opening
A 24-hour football tournament is to be held in order to mark the unveiling of the new £32m Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, North Lanarkshire, at the end of September.
The event will begin on 30 September to celebrate the opening of the complex, which forms part of a wider bid to transform the former Ravenscraig steelworks and has received backing from the Scottish Government. Facilities will include a full-sized indoor football pitch with spectator seating; a full-sized outdoor 3G pitch and six floodlit five-a-side pitches, all boasting Polytan surfaces. The pitch installer was WH Malcolm.
A multi-purpose sports hall with nine badminton courts and a Junckers Sylvasport Premium sprung wooden floor; a six-lane, 135m Mondo Sportflex Super X running track; throw and jump areas; and a strength and conditioning area also form part of the centre. A 500sq m (5,381sq ft) fitness suite equipped by Technogym, dance studios and a sports injury clinic complete the line-up of facilities.
North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL) and North Lanarkshire Council contributed funding towards the development, which will be operated by the trust on behalf of the local authority. NLL chief executive Blane Dodds said: "Ravenscraig will take sporting facilities in Scotland to a whole new level and demonstrates our commitment to provide the very best leisure opportunities for the people of North Lanarkshire."
The venue is to be used during the International Children's Games in 2011, as well as offering training facilities for London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 athletes.
