Former ParalympicGB chief executive joins GLL
Phil Lane, the former Chief Executive of the British Paralympic Association has joined charitable Social Enterprise Greenwich Leisure (GLL) as Head of Sport and Olympic Legacy.
Phil's new role will see him develop a sports strategy for GLL combining the organisation's corporate objectives, the needs of local communities and the priorities of national governing bodies.
He will also look at ways in which to develop GLL's Sport Foundation, which provides funding to young athletes, as part of the leisure operator's Olympic legacy strategy.
Prior to joining GLL, Phil spent ten years as Chief Executive of ParalympicGB. He was included in The Times Power 100 in Sport in 2010 and successfully took teams to the last five Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, with Great Britain finishing second in the medal table at both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
A former head teacher who played rugby at club and county level until injury curtailed his sporting career, Phil is a qualified RFU coach who coached clubs Saracens and Blackheath before becoming coach and selector with England Colts [U19] and head coach with England U18s.
Commenting on his appointment, Phil Lane said, "I am looking forward to the challenge of my new role at GLL. As one of the UK's leading social enterprises it has an innovative and much emulated business model that successfully combines corporate success with a strong social agenda.
"At this particularly exciting time for sport and in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games, I hope that I will be able to add value to GLL's business and its sports offer within the capital. While also looking beyond 2012 at ways in which we can maintain a sporting legacy and maximise the opportunities created by the London Games."
GLL Deputy Managing Director Peter Bundey added, "We are delighted that someone with Phil's wealth of experience and expertise has joined GLL. His track record speaks for itself and he will undoubtedly be a huge asset to the organisation, helping us to develop a coherent sporting strategy for the long term."
