Former SCFC stadium site put up for sale
Vetch Field, the former home of Swansea City Football Club (SCFC), has been put up for sale after the local authority revealed that it had received "several" expressions of interest for developing the site.
Swansea Council hopes to appoint a developer in summer 2010 to transform the stadium, which is set to incorporate a public space incorporating a special feature commemorating the venue's football heritage, a play area, a community centre and a housing development. Items of Vetch Field memorabilia, including turnstiles, the West Upper stand and stadium clock will be preserved and transferred to the city's museum for safekeeping as part of the proposals.
Swansea Council leader Chris Holley said: "It's important we develop a scheme that meets the needs of the nearby community while commemorating the proud history of the Vetch and it's very encouraging that several developers have already been in touch about the project." Vetch Field was home to SCFC until 2005, when the club moved to the Liberty Stadium on the outskirts of the city centre.
