Former chief executive of Wembley jailed
Two former executives of gaming and greyhound track operator Wembley have been given jail sentences following convictions for conspiring to bribe an American politician.
Former chief executive Nigel Potter was sentenced to three years while the former general manager of the Lincoln Park track, Daniel Bucci, received three years and five months, according to reports.
The Lincoln Park operation was also found guilty of wire fraud and fined US$1.5m (£846,000, 1.2m euro) in what the judge described as one of the “saddest chapters” in the state’s history.
In August, both Potter and Bucci were convicted of conspiring to bribe the law firm of former Speaker John Harwood with up to US$4m (£2.3m, 3.3m euro) in a bid to get 1,000 more video lottery machines installed at Lincoln Park and block a rival Indian casino.
Potter had asked for leniency, reportedly saying: “If I knew then what I know now… my actions would have been different.”
Earlier this year, Wembley sold Lincoln Park to consortium BLB Investors. Wembley has now been wound up.
