Foster joins design team for MGM Mirage CityCenter scheme
US-based casino resort operator MGM Mirage has unveiled the design team which will create its planned US$5bn (£2.8bn, 4bn euro) Project CityCenter scheme for Las Vegas, and among the world-renowned architects is UK-based Sir Norman Foster.
The team has already begun working on the 18million square foot, (1.7million sq m) project, which will include a 60-storey, 4,000-room hotel and casino; two 400-room non-gaming hotels, 500,000sq ft (46,500sq m) of retail, dining and entertainment venues and 1,640 condominiums.
The development is scheduled to open in late 2009 in the heart of Las Vegas.
“Project CityCenter confirms a cultural and lifestyle revival of city living, reaffirms the growing sophistication and maturity of Las Vegas and sets a benchmark for new growth and exciting new experiences as the city moves into its next 100 years,” said Terry Lanni, chair and chief executive officer of MGM Mirage.
Sir Norman Foster’s London-based Foster and Partners, will be responsible for the exterior of one of the non-gaming hotels, with the other designed by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates.
The Foster-designed property will be operated by the Light Group, which was responsible for creating the Light and Caramel nightclubs at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.
Cesar Pelli and Associates – creators of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur – will be the lead architect on the 4,000-room hotel and casino part of the development. Details: www.mgmmirage.com
